We Support Census 2010!
Every year, the federal government distributes more than $400 billion to state, local and tribal governments based on census data. These dollars are awarded to programs in schools, communities, and regions. They are particularly important for very small communities like those in Gray County where several of our communities have qualified for Community Block Development Grants. With an accurate census count, we may even qualify for Rural Development funds.
And so, it's critical for the US Census Bureau to get an accurate census count in Gray County!
Accurate census data helps us to:
- Get appropriate funding for important community initiatives and programs.
- Engage in critical policy advocacy and grassroots outreach.
- Ensure that we are providing the right services to the right people in the right areas in Southwestern Kansas.
It is important to understand that the Census counts “people” rather than citizens, so it is vitally important to count everyone residing in Gray County. During the 2000 Census, Gray County counted only 76% of our residents. Our goal is to come far closer to counting everyone in the 2010 Census!
Here's what you need to do: The United States Postal Service (USPS) will deliver census questionnaires in March 2010. It will be one of the shortest census forms in history, asking 10 questions and taking about 10 minutes to complete. There will be no questions about citizenship and all data is confidential. Individual data will not be shared with anyone or any other agency. Everyone living at a specific address should be counted.
Send your questionnaire back by Census Day, April 1, 2010, and then remind others to do the same.
